Course Description:

Pain can be a debilitating experience for the older person, affecting them both mentally and physically. This course explains how the learner can recognise the signs and symptoms of pain and assess appropriately.

This course explores what pain is and the different types of pain that the older person may experience. It guides the learner through communicative and protective pain behaviours that may indicate that the older people is experiencing pain, and provides a case study that demonstrates how to conduct a comprehensive pain assessment. Finally, it identifies a number of validated assessment tools the learner can use, based on the individual’s condition and cognitive status.

After completing this course, participants should be able to

  • Define pain and identify different types of pain
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of pain in older people
  • Identify how to assess pain in older people

This course is appropriate for all Care Staff and Nursing Staff.
